TikTok Shop has strict guidelines on image resolution, file size, and file type as well as how many pictures can be uploaded.
Number of Picture Limitations
TikTok Shop has very strict guidelines on pictures you can upload to their platform. Each product can only have 9 pictures in total. So, while you can have up to 3 pictures per variant, you can only have a MAXIMUM of 9 pictures on TikTok Shop.
Please make sure that the first 9 pictures on your Shopify are the ones that you want to have on TikTok Shop.
File Constraints
- TikTok Shop currently only accepts the file types .PNG and .JPG
- The maximum file size is 5MB
- The minimum resolution for images is 600x600 pixels
- The maximum resolution for images is 6000x6000 pixels
If you have a different file type for your images, you will need to convert them to .PNG or .JPG for TikTok Shop to accept them. You can use CloudConvert.com to easily convert your files. If you need to change the resolution of your images, we recommend the open source product GIMP since it's free to use. It will also open many different file types so you can also use this to convert your files to the right file type.
How SKU IQ Works with Pictures and TikTok
- SKU IQ will skip any images that are too small, too large, or are of the wrong file format and move on to the next image
- We will skip any pictures past the ninth
- If we cannot send a variant image, either because it is not acceptable or there are 9 images that have already been sent, we will assign the first product image (the parent image) to each additional variant
- Products that have images in .HEIC or .WEBP formats are now converted automatically to .JPG format. As long as the file sizes meet the constraints, they will pass to TikTok Shop.
.HEIC formatted files typically are associated with photos taking with smart phones (e.g. iPhones & Android Smart Phones)
.WEBP formatted files are typically used by web developers (and Shopify!) to make smaller, richer picture files.
Work Arounds
These are recommendations on how you can work around these limitations.
- Never have more than nine images in total for the main product and all of its variants
- Never have more than three images for variants
- If product variants break the limitations, consider reorganizing your catalog to fit within the image limits (e.g. have a product for each color with the variations only being for sizes)
- Have the second image of your product show all of the colors available or sizes available, like in the image below
